Hasan Orbey Memorial Award for Research Excellence in Graduate Studies is awarded to, at most, one M.Sc. and Ph.D. students, for the evaluation and recognition of  the success and the performance of the people doing M.Sc. and Ph.D. research on chemical engineering.

Prof. Dr. Hasan Orbey was born in Bandırma at 17th of April, 1954. He got his high school education in Ankara Fen Lisesi. In 1976, he graduated and in 1979, got his M.Sc. degree from METU Chemical Engineering department. He received his Ph.D. from McGill University, Canada in 1983 and became a faculty at METU in the same year. He became an assistant professor in 1984 and associate professor in 1988. He earned Fulbright Visiting Scholar Program and conducted research with Prof. S. Sandler in University of Delaware between 1990 and 1992. Prof. Orbey became professor in 1993. In 1994, he started working at the Center for Molecular and Engineering Thermodynamics in University of Delaware. He served as a faculty for one year in University of Singapore in 1996. In 1997, he started working as the director of polymer unit in Aspen Technology. He published his first book written with Prof. S. Sandler named "Modeling Vapor-Liquid Equilibria" in 1998. Prof. Dr. Hasan Orbey was a scientist with the international reputation on the area of applied thermodynamics. AIChe held a special session for him in their yearly meeting in 2000 to honor his contributions to the science on this area of interest. In addition to this, "Industrial and Engineering Chemistry Research" one of the journals of American Chemical Society published a special issue for Prof. Orbey in 2002.
