Prof. Baç was born in Antalya. He graduated from İstanbul Moda Primary School and Şişli Terakki before his entrance to Robert College for his high school education. He got his B.Sc., M.Sc. and Ph.D. degrees from Middle East Technical University.

 

He conducted scientific research in Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Massachusetts, US between 1980-1982. He returned to the Chemical Engineering Department as a faculty in 1982. Prof. Baç served as assistant professor, associate professor and professor for the department. He also served as a faculty in Worcester Polytechnic Institute, Northeastern University, Boston, MA. He was appointed as the Vice President of the CAAMP (Center for Advanced Microgravity Materials Processing) which is a research center of National Aeronautics and Space Administration, NASA. Prof. Baç conducted some scientific experiments about the nanoporous advanced materials at spaceship Columbia as part of this research between 1989-2003. One of the Turkish flags that has ever been taken to space with the STS-73 spaceflight, which was a 16 days spaceflight with Columbia space shuttle, was presented to the day's Prime Minister of Turkey Süleyman Demirel by Prof. Baç and his colleague Astronaut Prof. Sacco who are working with the experiments together.

 

He gave seminars to the Russian cosmonauts and American austronauts in Houston about the spaceflights and the experiments in 2001 and 2002 that he participated and conducted. After the collapse of Columbia by a tragic accident in 2003, the spaceflights were stopped and Prof. Baç returned to Turkey in 2004. He became the head of the Chemical Engineering Department at METU.

 

He served as the Head of Chemical Engineering Department in Yeditepe University in 2007. Prof. Baç was appointed as the President of Yeditepe University at September 1st, 2010.
